Public Works Updates

The Hayes Drive project is over budget and long overdue. Construction companies hired by the city and county should be much better vetted for their track record of timeliness. Milking the clock on the public's time and dime is a crime.

Crime

All crime can be traced to substance abuse. Alcohol-related crime should be a priority. We propose a "Right to Buy" card, which can be obtained through RCPD in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Revenue. People wishing to obtain this card permitting their purchase of alcohol in Manhattan will need to be felony-free, probation-free, and have no alcohol-related misdemeanors. Alcohol merchants including bars and liquor stores will need to card people for both Drivers License and the Right-to-Buy card.

Former Mayor Hatesolh was successful in appointing someone to a high-paying, low-stress job in the final minutes of his term.

Homelessness

Manhattan has a unique opportunity to quash what little homelessness it has. The Manhattan Emergency Shelter has 47 beds and a 75% success rate of finding those it houses a permanent and affordable housing solution. At the street level, chronic substance abuse is the only thing preventing homeless people from being interviewed and accepted into the shelter. Executive Director Emily Wagner says that a city-funded detox facility would break the log jam and get addicted people off the street and into homes.
